  1. Media Adviser to Dr. Tonye Clinton Jaja

    Dear DAILY POST,

I  am surprised at your newspaper’s failure to contact me to hear my own side of the story before Publication of the above named story.

In the spirit of balanced reporting, ethical reporting, and responsible journalism please kindly find attached to this email a copy of my detailed reply and Rebuttal to the story that was published by your newspaper about my good self in my capacity as the Chairman of the Governing Board of the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC).

Also, kindly find below a brief summary of my Rebuttal as follows:

By way of re-introduction, my name is Dr. Tonye Clinton Jaja, I am a lawyer and an official of the Federal Government of Nigeria in my capacity as the Chairman of the Governing Board of the Nigerian Copyright Commission.

Ever since I took a strong stance against certain corrupt staff, officials and some members of the Board of the Nigerian Copyright Commission, I have become the target of unrelenting attacks on my reputation by online newspapers and social media platforms.

I have received threats to my life and reputation by phone calls and in writing.

The reason for this latest wave and campaign of calumy is because by a letter dated 22nd September 2020, myself and some members of the Governing Board of the Nigerian Copyright Commission recommended the suspension of Mr John Asein the Director-General of the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC).

The reason for the recommendation was because the Code of Conduct Bureau and the ICPC are investigating the said Mr John Asein is currently under investigation by these agencies for abuse of office, corruption and conflict of interest by his operation as the sole signatory to the DOMICILIARY BANK ACCOUNT of Reproduction Rights Society of Nigeria-REPRONIG, one of the private organizations regulated by the NCC.

The recommendation of the Governing Board members was that Mr John Asein should be placed on suspension until completion of the investigation by the Code of Conduct Bureau.

The letter to His Excellency Mr President was written through the Hon. Minister of Justice and copied to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

Suspension of public officials undergoing investigation is the general rule of law, and a tradition in the public service as prescribed in the Public Service Rules and other extant laws of Nigeria.

The Commissioner of Police of Anambra State, who coincidentally is a member of the Governing Board of the NCC also wrote in support of the suspension of Mr John Asein.

Proceeding on suspension to allow for unfettered investigation by the Code of Conduct Bureau ought to be the honourable thing to recommend, however, it takes an honourable person to do an honourable thing.

Chairman of the Governing Board of the NCC did the honourable thing, he even went a step further by honouring the invitation from the Code of Conduct Bureau, by it’s letter of 14th August 2020, by submitting both oral and written statement and information about the on-going investigation of Mr John Asein’s weighty allegations.

Dr. Tonye Clinton Jaja, went a step further by deposing to an affidavit to authenticate the truthfulness of his submissions to Code of Conduct Bureau.
He deposed to the said affidavit at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory.

If the members of the Governing Board of the NCC are convinced about the innocence of Mr John Asein, let them go and swear to an affidavit in support of their written claims.

If they can swear to an affidavit before any High Court of Justice that the allegations of conflict of interest, infractions of the Code of Conduct Legislation, and abuse of office by Mr John Asein the false allegations, then we can believe them.

They can go a step further by submitting their sworn affidavits to the Code of Conduct Bureau and the ICPC, which is the proper forum to ventilate their greviances.

The pages of newspapers is not the proper forum.

Finally, since their purported letter is in itself a violation of certain relevant laws,
I am under obligation as Chairman of the Governing Board of the NCC to report the matter to the relevant law enforcement agencies.

Thanking you in advance for your assistance in advance.

    Dr. Tonye Clinton Jaja
