The rising numbers of theft and vandalism of railway infrastructure is alarming.
On Wednesday, the transport Minister, Fikile Mbalula who spoke in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni through the launch of the ministerial safety plan condemned the acts of the vandals.
He stated that the Passenger Rail Company of South Africa (Prasa) infrastructure was destroyed by syndicates.
He described these syndicates as boastful, aggressive and a few even rent kids to strip cables off railway traces.
The ministerial safety plan’s technique entails the in-sourcing of over 3,000 safety guards to guard Prasa’s infrastructure from vandals.
The plan was launched in collaboration with different departments within the Justice, Security and Safety cluster.
Mbalula added that he suspects that these syndicates have insiders working with Prasa’s officers who make it straightforward for them to commit these crimes.
“It will likely be incorrect to assume that criminals and syndicates who’re vandalising this property have been performing on their very own.”
“A number of the enabling factors that made it doable for them to have a vacation right here and a honeymoon at Prasa is due to our choices,” he stated.
