The Police in Abia have begun manhunt for the remaining 9 of the 29 felony suspects that escaped from police cell in Umuahia on Saturday.
SP Geoffrey Ogbonna, the Police Public Relations Officer for Abia Command, confirmed to the Information Company of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday that 29 detainees escaped from the Umuahia Central Police Station’s cell after overpowering the guard on obligation.
Narrating the incident, Ogbonna stated that one of many detainees had appealed to the guard (identify withheld) to help him with water to flush the bathroom.
He stated that unknown to the guard, the detainees had conspired to assault him with a view to escape from detention.
“This occurred round 9.00 p.m. on Saturday,’’ he stated.

He added that as quickly because the guard introduced the water and opened the iron bar, the suspects rushed out, overpowered him and took to their heels.
The command’s spokesman stated that 20 of the suspects had been rearrested that night time and within the early hours of Sunday.
He expressed the arrogance that the remaining 9 escapees could be rearrested and appealed for help from Umuahia residents.
“I enchantment to members of the general public to be vigilant and report any unusual face or faces in soiled attires of their neighbourhood to the police.
“The suspects had soiled attires they wore within the cell and could also be in search of the place to steal folks’s garments with a view to look respectable to have the ability to escape from the city,’’ Ogbonna stated.
